Q&A with Controller Bianca Bryne

We are excited to spotlight Bianca as she shifts to her new position as our Controller. Bianca has been with Walker Development for several years and plays a critical role in keeping our projects and operations running smoothly. Her leadership, precision, and consistency behind the scenes are essential to our success.

While accounting often operates quietly in the background, Bianca’s impact is felt across every project. We asked her to share more about her role and experience.

Q: Accounting in construction is often behind the scenes—what are some of the most critical responsibilities your team handles that people might not realize?
A: We keep track of every cent spent by the company – as well as every cent received by the company.

Q: How does the accounting team support projects from pre-construction through closeout?
A: We control a project from the very beginning. This includes creating the project profile in Intacct/Procore, loading the project for billing, tracking cost, billing the project to the client, paying subcontractors, and collecting payment. We do it all.

Q: Can you share an example of how your team helps solve problems or keep projects moving smoothly?
A: Our weekly AP/AR meetings help us keep track of job billings/payments and subcontractor payments. Here we go over the projects with the Executive Director of Operations for weekly check ins on all active projects. And we also are included in our biweekly company meets where we get clued in on every project at every stage's status

Q: What has stood out to you most about working at Walker Development?
A: The tightknit group of people with some of the best worth ethic I have ever met.

Q: As a woman in a leadership role, what has your experience been like working in the construction industry?
A: At this point, I have been in the construction industry for over 10 years. Times have changed. I have never felt so appreciated and respected in the construction workplace. Now, we are seen as equals. Whether it’s the owners or field staff at Walker, I have always felt comfortable and welcomed.

Q: What advice would you give to someone interested in accounting within the construction field?
A: If you're interested, take the leap. The construction industry is always growing and will never die out. I followed the accounting career path because I love consistency. When it comes to accounting 1+1 is always going to equal 2. Construction will always be an industry and if construction is around so will accounting.
