Cultural and Historic Commercial Renovation with a People First Construction Approach

Walker recently completed a specialized interior renovation at the Cambridge Multicultural Arts Center, a cultural institution housed within a 200-year-old historic brownstone in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

The project transformed outdated restrooms into a modern, inclusive environment while respecting the building’s historic character. Existing restrooms were reconfigured into an open-concept layout featuring a new ADA-compliant and gender-neutral bathrooms. Selective demolition methods preserved original woodwork and trim, ensuring the new spaces complemented the brownstone’s historic fabric.

The renovation also integrated new plumbing systems and energy-efficient LED lighting within the constraints of the existing structure.

Renovating within an occupied, two-century-old building presented real challenges—modernizing aging infrastructure while minimizing disruption to adjacent tenants and active programming. It is a clear demonstration of the Walker teams ability to deliver high‑quality results in cultural, historic, and occupied environments where attention to detail and communication are as important as construction itself.
